Newborn & First Year Packages

I am so excited to be working with you, and am looking forward to your new arrival and upcoming session! Photos will always be the most meaningful art you own, so I want you to have the best experience possible. This is a time for you to relax and enjoy yourself while I capture your new arrival and/or your baby's milestones during their first year. This guide will help you to prepare for your session(s) so that you get the most out of our time together. I've included tips on what to expect during your studio session, ways to add unique, meaningful touches to your images, as well as how to prepare your baby. I can't wait to get started!

Newborn Session

A typical newborn session will last about 60 minutes and ideally the baby will sleep through most of the session. I normally use 2-3 different set-ups with the newborn and in addition to the individual photos, I like to capture a family photo and a sibling photo if possible.

How to Prep Baby for Newborn Session:

Make sure the baby has a clean diaper and is fed 20 minutes before the session starts. This will help the baby fall into a nice slumber for their portraits.
No outfits are needed, I will use several different colored wraps during your newborn's session. Most are neutral colors that photograph nicely.
If you have any special extras you'd like to include (hats, socks, special blankets, etc.), please feel free to bring them.

How to Prep Yourself:

Make enough time to prepare on the day of your session so you don't feel rushed and anxious.
Be sure to eat and hydrate!
Let go of your need for perfection. This is the biggest anxiety for most moms.
Lastly, enjoy yourself! These moments with your baby will fly by, and your captured memories will be cherished for years to come!

How to Prep Siblings:

Make sure they are rested and fed!
Depending on the age of the sibling I like to start out the session with the sibling/family photo. I found this works best for young siblings as they tend to be very active.
Feel free to bring toys/activities for the sibling to do while the remainder of the newborn session takes place.

Sitter Session

Sitter sessions are taken once your baby can sit up on their own, typically 6-10 months old. This session will last 20-30 minutes. I will rotate between your baby sitting on the ground and in props if they are super active.

How to Prep Baby for the Sitter Session:

Make sure your baby is rested and fed. Please bring finger foods/snacks to help keep your baby happy and help them look at the camera.
Be sure to have a clean diaper for the start of the session.
Arrive with your first outfit and have an additional to change into. Keep in mind neutral colors photograph best and create a timeless image.
Typically between outfits I will grab a few shots with the baby in their diaper using different different props.
If you have any special extras you'd like to include (hats, headbands, special blankets, etc.), please feel free to bring them.

Studio Session

All of the packages listed on this page are done at my home. I am in the process of creating a home studio, so in the meantime, I take all photos using the large picture window in my living room for the most natural light possible.

First Birthday Session

First birthday sessions are a celebration of your child's first year! You have the option to have their first photos taken in my studio or outside. I like to capture both posed and natural photos of your child at this age, along with one family photo.

How to Prep Baby for your First Birthday Session:

Make sure your baby is rested and fed. Please bring finger foods/snacks to help keep your baby happy and help them look at the camera.
Be sure to have a clean diaper for the start of the session.
Arrive in the outfit you wish to have photographed. Keep in mind neutral colors photograph best and create a timeless image. Avoid any neon colors as they create color casts on your child's skin.
If you have any special extras you'd like to include (hats, headbands, special blankets, etc.), please feel free to bring them.

Cake Smash Session

Cake Smash Sessions are an adorable way to celebrate your child's first birthday. We will start out with 1-2 outfits for some fun, non-messy traditional portraits before getting messy with the cake. I love to style your cake smash session to match your baby's first birthday party theme. You can choose any color scheme or theme you'd like. I have a variety of banners and paper fans to dress up the backgrounds. You are welcome to bring any balloons or party decorations to help personalize your set. The further in advance you schedule your session, the more time we have to plan!

How to Prep for Cake Smash Session:

If you plan to use your portraits for your child's first birthday party I recommend scheduling your cake smash session when your baby is 11 months old.
When purchasing your smash cake, keep in mind that buttercream or whipped frosting smashes the best. Please avoid fondant as it is difficult for baby's to chew. Also avoid chocolate cake- as you can imagine it does not photograph well. If you are not sure where to get a small cake from I am more than happy to help!
Please bring finger food/snacks for your baby along with a sippy cup.
This is going to be REALLY messy. Please bring a change of clothes for your baby to go home in.

Image Selection

After your session is complete, I will review all of your images and select 1-2 photos to share with you as a sneak peek within 24 hours. With your approval, I will also share via social media. The top images from each location and outfit will be chosen and I will edit and deliver your selected number of digital pictures within 2 weeks. If you would like your images on a flash drive, it will be mailed to you for an additional $10.

Digital Images

After your session, you will receive a link to a Pass+ online private gallery which will contain all of your edited images. Once you have signed up for a free account, you can download and share your images. Pass+ safely stores your images for 10 years!

Online Public Gallery

In addition to your Pass+ gallery, I offer a gallery of your session on my JSmith Photography website. This gallery is included in the session price. If you would like this, please be sure to select the Online Public Gallery in the contract. This is a great place to view and share all of your images with family and friends.
